    Where Memory Becomes Material

A Material Research Project by RUG STAR

Produced in Nepal in collaboration with the Tibetan manufactory Reliance, RE_WOVEN begins with the careful gathering of precious leftover yarns from previous productions. Approximately 70% silk and 30% Tibetan Highland wool are collected, sorted and organized into colour families before the creative process begins.

At the heart of the collection lies a process we call Balling.

Rather than weaving with a single yarn, three individual yarns are brought together to form one. Through the combination of different tones, materials and intensities, a rich and vibrant melange emerges. Every metre of yarn becomes a composition in itself, carrying subtle shifts of colour, depth and texture.

Once the colour families are established, each rug develops its own character. Additional accent colours — what we call Spices — can be introduced to create gentle harmonies, unexpected contrasts or distinctive colour breaks. These interventions allow every piece to develop its own atmosphere while remaining part of the larger collection.

The visual foundation of RE_WOVEN is inspired by the traditional Tibetan checkerboard. Yet this structure is never presented as a rigid pattern. Through the horizontal movement of the handloom and the complexity of the melange yarns, the geometry gradually dissolves into a flowing landscape of colour.

Like natural terrain, the surface expands and contracts. Colour densities appear and disappear. Boundaries soften. Layers merge.

What begins as a checkerboard transforms into a living field where endless nuances interact with one another.
